Are you comfortable preparing nutritious vegetarian meals?
For those not familiar with vegetarian diets, cooking vegetarian meals can be a bit intimidating. What to prepare for dinner is a constant challenge for everyone but especially for those families where there are family members with food restrictions. However, it doesn’t have to be so complicated to prepare a nutritious vegetarian meal, really.
To ensure your family is getting the nutrients they need to grow and thrive on their vegetarian diet, I have put together a list of a few things I’d advise you NOT to do when preparing vegetarian meals.
Meal planning and preparation isn’t something to be taken lightly. We need to feed our kids nutritious meals regardless of whether or not we like to cook. As a parent we need to ensure they are getting the nutrients they need for their growing bodies, regardless of the type of diet they choose to follow. While these things may seem easy-to-do to get meatless meals on the table, they may not be providing a good balance of key nutrients.
3 things not to do when you are preparing a vegetarian meal:
1. Don’t Just Remove The Meat
Don’t just remove the meat/chicken from the dish you are preparing and serve your vegetarian whatever is left. This may seem like the easiest way to ensure she is fed but it does not guarantee she is getting a well- balanced meal. Instead look for good-quality substitutes to replace the meat/chicken.
2. Don’t Just Serve Side Dishes and Salad
Don’t assume that side dishes and/or salad is a well-balanced meal. Take stock of what you are serving in these side dishes and salads. Is there protein, healthy fat and some good quality carbohydrates in these dishes? Is this food going to keep her full for a few hours?
3. Don’t rely on fake meat
Don’t rely on processed, faux-meats to replace animal products. These foods are okay once in a while but should not be eaten on a daily basis, for more information about these vegetarian meat alternatives, read this post.
